Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Sites

Dayton History

Greene County Historical Society
Showcasing local history in a three-building complex, including a 1799 log house, 1875 town house, and Carriage House museum with permanent and temporary displays, plus office and museum store. Restored caboose at Xenia Station.

Historic Grimes Field
Two adjacent sites, Champaign Aviation Museum and Grimes Flying Lab Foundation, include World War II-era aircraft and development in aircraft lighting and safety from Warren G. Grimes.

Historic WACO Field
Take a flight back in time to the glory days of WACO aircraft, built in Troy from 1923 to 1946, with the museum and the airfield just south of Troy.

Historic Woodland Cemetery & Arboretum
You will marvel at the innovative “curvilinear” landscape design at this fifth oldest “Garden Cemetery” in the nation. The 105-acre Victorian “Historic District” is open 365 days a year. Enter the 1889 Richardson Romanesque Gateway and follow the signs to the Wright Brothers and Dunbar grave sites, or call to arrange a free audio or guided tour of the burial sites of America’s industrial and aviation heroes such as Kettering, Patterson, Deeds and other “Barn Gang” members. Perfect for exercise enthusiasts, or driving.

National Aviation Hall of Fame
Meet the heroes and heroines of aviation and space travel—and explore the history of aviation—at this facility located within the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

National Museum of the United States Air Force
Get a sweeping view of Air Force and military aviation progress at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the largest and oldest museum of its kind in the world.

The Wright B Flyer
Experience the thrill of actually flying in a replica of the Wright B Flyer, the first mass-produced airplane in the world, along with other historical displays.

Vectren Dayton Air Show
One of America’s premier air shows. The Air Show showcases world-class aerobatic champions, military jet demonstrations and entertainment for the whole family celebrating Dayton’s aviation heritage as home of the Wright Brothers, National Museum of the US Air Force and Wright Patterson AFB. Wright Family Foundation
The Wright Family Foundation supports the preservation of aviation history related to Orville and Wilbur Wright by funding research and publication of aviation history, scholarships for studies in the fields of aviation and aeronautics, educational programming, the restoration and display of aviation artifacts, and landmarks and memorials related to the Wright brothers’ story.

Wright Image Group
The Wright Image Group, Inc. has taken the lead in building the Wright FlyerMonument. With a 120′ wingspan, the imposing structure sitting atop a pedestal 220’high at the crossroads of I-70 and I-75 will be seen by over 156,000 vehicles a day.
