Ohio legislation: ‘Whitehead did not fly’

BRIDGEPORT—Ohio and Connecticut fought shoulder-to-shoulder in the Civil War, but when it comes to which aviator was the first to fly, the two states are crossing bayonets.

Nobody is mustering the militia just yet, but it is expected that the Ohio legislature will pass a measure in early 2015 declaring that “Gustave Whitehead did not fly a powered, heavier-than-air machine of his own design on August 14, 1901, or on any other date.” That bill, HCR63, was introduced by Ohio state Rep. Rick Perales, R-Beavercreek.
